Great Inspirer…Hellen Keller… …

…Something inside her prompted and the pain began to flow in the form of words as she wrote,” Even as the roots, shut in the darksome earth share in the treetops joyance and conceive of sunshine and wide air and winged things, by the sympathy of nature, so do I”

She is none other than the great inspirational writer ‘Hellen Keller’. She was deaf as well as blind but how well she had overcome her disabilities! She was not inborn handicapped but because of severe fever at the age of one year she lost her eyesight and hearing capacity. For the young girl, the whole life became a continuous dark night with nothing to see or hear. Her parents were very supportive. With the help of her teachers she began to know the names given to various objects at the age of eight. With time she learned to read books in Braille script. But at that time, not too many books were available, but with the great teacher like Anne Sullivan, by her side who transferred all the books in Braille. Hellen was a voracious reader. Her thrust of knowledge took her to college. She faced too many difficulties but an eagerness to know the world around her to a position where she could become unaware of her disabilities. There were times when she was caught in misery, but she never allowed her mind to question her existence and the purpose of life. According to her there is in each of us a capacity to comprehend impressions and emotions, which have been experienced by mankind from the beginning. Each individual has a subconscious memory of green earth and murmuring waters. Blindness and deafness cannot rob him of this gift from past generations.

Even though she was not able to see anything, according to her the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched … but are felt in the heart. Although we people who are fortunate enough to be blessed with physical capabilities, seem to lack in mental capability to face the difficulties and accept the challenges of life. Hellen was a great optimist. She used to see the brighter side of everything. Here is a great example of true optimist in front of us. In her autobiography, she writes,

“ There is a joy in self-forgetfulness so I try to make the light in others’ eyes my sun, the music in others’ ears my symphony, the smile on others’ lips my happiness!”
